Westside is certified by AFMA for adhering to the Code of Conduct required for Safe Feed for Safe Food compliance.

Westside carries stock in South Africa. If additional extraordinary quantities are required then these additional quantities can be warehoused and supplied according to requirements planning schedule.

Westside’s main stockholding is in Johannesburg with facilities in Durban and Cape Town if required.

We offer a delivery service to most destinations.

Typically, orders are sent out the day after receipt of an official order. If the order is for extraordinary quantities, then it will involve a shipping lead time from the overseas manufacturing site.

AOmix Product Questions

AO-mix is an anti-oxidant blends that provide the total protection against free radicals that ruminants and monogastrics need, to optimise fertility, vitality and immune system support.

Anti-oxidants are of vital importance to the overall health of livestock. All living organisms, including livestock, produce free radicals: unstable molecules that can cause damage to cell membranes, DNA, and, eventually, to the overall health of the immune system and other functions. Clearly, free radicals can have quite a negative impact on technical results.

The only way to neutralise them and limit their damage is with anti-oxidants, which animals can only acquire via supplements in their feed. However, in order to ensure an optimal anti-oxidant status, the ingredient must not only have a high anti-oxidant value, it also has to be highly effective in terms of bioavailability and distribution.

Oxidative stress is essentially an imbalance between the free radicals and the ability of the body to counteract or detoxify their harmful effects through neutralization by antioxidants. This can result in the following:

  • Reduced feed intake
  • Intestinal barrier damage
  • Immune imbalance
  • susceptibility to diseases
  • Decreased productivity (meat quality)
  • Low reproductive performance (fertility, sperm vitality, hatchability)

The degree to which anti-oxidants in a premix actually become available to an animal depends on how well they are absorbed. This is an important factor, since ruminants and monogastrics have very different types of digestive systems. A supplement that ruminants can optimally digest will be sub-optimally digested by poultry and swine, and vice versa. Even if the anti-oxidant value is high, the digestibility determines the level to which the anti-oxidants are absorbed and actually become available to the animal’s system.

Because of this, AO-mix is available in two different, carefully developed blends – one for ruminants and another for monogastrics – each tailored to their specific digestive systems. This ensures that your feed mixes will offer equally high anti-oxidant bioavailability to all your end-users.

Vitamin E is not unique in its ability to neutralise free radicals. It belongs to a family of antioxidant compounds called polyphenols. Within this very diverse family, there are molecules that have a greater antioxidant capacity per gram than vitamin E. Furthermore, some polyphenols have improved bioavailability. Thus, this improved activity and availability of some polyphenols result in a more effective antioxidant supply in livestock than vitamin E alone.

Aside from bioavailability, another crucial factor in an antioxidant’s effectiveness is its distribution within the body. One of the factors that influences this distribution is the water versus fat solubility, which differs for each anti-oxidant. This determines the areas the anti-oxidant can reach in the cell. Vitamin E, for instance, only comes as far as the cell membrane, so can only deliver its anti-oxidant effect at this site – not in the cell’s internal or external watery environment. The natural polyphenols in AO-mix have been selected to range from water soluble to biphasic (soluble in both water and fat) to fat soluble, which ensures an optimal anti-oxidant status in every part of the cellular environment.

Studies have proved the efficacy of selected polyphenols in both swine and poultry using a heat challenge model. Animals were fed either a negative control diet containing NRC-recommended levels of vitamin E, a positive control diet containing industry-standard levels of supplementation (above NRC), or a test diet in which the vitamin E above NRC was replaced by the polyphenol blend AOmix. The results indicated that animals under a heat challenge, when fed vitamin E at NRC recommendations, presented signs of oxidative imbalance, showing a lower performance. This increase of oxidative imbalance was ameliorated by both, the higher level of vitamin E treatment and the treatment containing NRC levels of vitamin E plus AOmix. There were no significant differences in terms of performance and antioxidant status between the higher level vitamin E treatment and that containing AOmix. 

Properly selected polyphenols, with a good bio-availability and a good in vivo antioxidant action, such as AOmix can provide antioxidant protection, helping animals to perform under challenging conditions.

Betain96 Product Questions

Betain96 is a methyl donor supporting protein and DNA synthesis. It can partially replace choline and is a more efficient methyl donor in comparison to choline chloride

Betain96 functions very closely with choline, folic acid, vitamin B12 and S-adenosylmethionine all of which function as methyl donors and which are essential for the normal body function of the animal. Methyl donors carry and donate methyl molecules that facilitate necessary chemical processes in the metabolism of the animal. These methyl donors cannot be synthesized by the animal, so they need to be provided in the feed.

Betain96 supports normal body function and performance of the animal during periods of high ambient temperature by acting as an osmoregulator and therefore reducing the negative effects of heat stress and even coccidiosis. It also influences fat and protein deposition and can be used to improve carcass quality through the higher percentage of lean meat and reduction in fat deposition. It can also help to reduce fatty livers. When present in intestinal cells, it can assist in maintaining gut tissue integrity, thus supporting nutrient absorption. Betain96 can contribute to improved carcass quality use of Betain96 in premix improves vitamin stability compared to choline chloride.

Betain96 is used in animal feeds to save costs by replacing choline chloride and methionine as methyl donor. Studies have shown that it can be used to replace part of the choline chloride with higher efficacy and can also be used to replace part of the methionine in the diet. This helps to reduce the feed cost without compromising performance.

Improved performance – animals use energy when trying to reduce the effects of heat stress which can have negative effects on their production – reduced milk yield in dairy cows, less eggs from laying hens, reduced feed intake and performance in pigs. Betain96 can function as an osmoregulatory by increasing water retention capacity of the animal and ultimately reduces the heat stress and improves feed intake and translates into improved animal health and performance.

European Protein Product Questions

Tonisity Product Questions

Tonisity Px is a ground-breaking product and the only known ‘non-milk’ drink for pigs that is used from Day 2 and throughout the weaning period. It is a highly palatable isotonic protein drink supplying essential nutrients and protein to all swine classes. Developed by the collaboration of food scientists and veterinarians specializing in emergency and critical care, Tonisity Px was scientifically formulated to provide key amino acids, early isotonic hydration and nutritional support for newborn pigs from 24-48 hours old. By decreasing the gut pH and supporting metabolic function of intestinal cells, Tonisity Px improves pig health, resulting in fewer deaths and removals. The first week for a newborn piglet sets the course for healthy growth and a healthy system throughout its lifetime. That’s why it’s so important to target the absorption of nutrients at a cellular level from as early as Day 2. Attached is a brochure setting out the essential merits of this product.

The Answer is Most Certainly Yes.

We have measured Tonisity Px consumption across 4 different trials, using 278 litters and 6,168 piglets. 500 mL of Tonisity Px was given once daily to litters from Days 2-8. Volume consumed was measured by weighing the amount given and then weighing the amount left in the pan the following morning.

We started with farms in the United Kingdom and then subsequently moved to on-farm trials in Spain and the USA. Trials were conducted under real-world farm conditions, with data collection performed by veterinarians and animal health technicians.

 There are 2 main parameters to pre-weaning productivity – mortality and weaning weight. Providing early nutritional support to the enterocytes is the key strategy here.  We’ve shown significant improvements in both parameters.
